How can I achieve malleable, healthy-looking hair after using a relaxer?

I was more than slightly worried when my director informed me that she wanted my character to have straight hair (which, needless to say, would also require me to have straight hair). However, I was actually quite pleased with the results when I went to a salon and had it professionally relaxed. It didn't even burn, for which I am tremendously thankful. The only problem, I found, is that the relaxer treatment left my hair quite weak and dull-looking. As such, it is difficult to work with (having tried both waxes and gels), and thus, I cannot fully achieve the gelled, formed, shiny look my director was after. How can I achieve that look?

Here are the specifics of my hair, if it helps:

-fairly short, men's hair (perhaps 2" in length)

-1/2 african, 1/2 caucasian

-a bit of dry-feeling right now

By the way, if anyone comes up with an answer that works, I may consider keeping my hair straight, however homosexual some of my friends claim that would make me.

Thank you :)
