How do black women/girls keep their hair healthy?

Okay...i am a 17 year old black girl and my hair is a wreck! It is constantly shedding/breaking/splitting and thinning around the edges. I usually sleep with a scarf aevey night and try to wear it down once or twice a week. I wear back in a bun or pony tail but not really tight. It's really not dry. I don't know what to do!!! I don't have enough $ to see a beautician on a reg basis but if any1 could reccomend a good one for a reasonable price...any tips of growing out my hair? thanx!

What really helps me is using a good moisturizing conditioner after shampooing. You should trim it every 6-8 weeks. And wrapping helps, too. Be sure to stay away from cotton bandannas. Sleep with a satin scarf. Also, be careful not to over-process your hair when relaxing it. I hope this helps!

Well you need to go get your ends clipped. If you don't do that your hair well just keep breaking. You should also purchase some regrowth products. Doo Gro is really great. You also need a hair dresser, I know you said you don't have the funds to say one regularly but maybe you should contact the nearest beauty school and let them take care of your hair. Make sure you only let one person do your hair everytime you go. Find out her/his schedule. If you follow those steps you should be great. Oh yeah leave the scarfs alone and get a silk bonnet.

I hear ya! I'm 20 and still trying to figure it out. I recently found this forum where black women talk about hair. It has a ton of information ranging to what kind of shampoo/conditioner is the best to hair moisturizers. Here is the link: http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/

Here is what i use on my hair,

shampoo... creme of nature for dry brittle hair.(walmart)$3

conditioner....dove, treseme (walmart),$3-4

leave in conditioner... mane n' tail (walgreens, any beautyy supply)$4-5

i dont shampoo my hair eveytime i wet it in the shower, because conditioners have detergents in them that clean you hair as well... and put conditoner in it, and comb out my hair, rinse and put in my mane and tail. it really makes a differnce in how my hair curls up and stays healthy. And dont use that protien hair gel, that will make your hair break off!! no softee brand, AMPRO , krystal, the best hair gels that are nice and moisturizing are hawaiin silky, fantasia IC hair polisher gel. they smell really good and wont make your hair hard and break off. too much protein will make you hair break like a twig. ANd stop using grease with mineral oil/petroleum.

if u like a grease, use anything organic root stimulator, kemi oyl , kewee oil, carrot oil, olive oil .read the ingredients..all that stuff can be found at any beauty supply (even Sally's)

1. wash every week or week and a half

2. Do conditioner washes with conditioner only, no shampoo at least every three days.

3. Use a protein reconstructor every week and a half or every two weeks

4. Do not use grease, nothing containing mineral oil or petroleum should be allowed to touch your scalp, it clogs pores and doesn't add moisture

5. Put natural oils on your hair while its wet

6. Use water based oil lotions

7. Use aloe vera gel mixed with water on your scalp to keep it moist

8. Use good shampoos and conditioners that do not contain sodium laureth sulfate, like Paves and Creme of Nature

9. Never use rubber bands

10. Sleep with a fitted satin cap at night

11. Do not allow your hair to rub against rough materials like cotton, cuderoy, anything more abrasive than silk...

12, limit heat use

13. Wet your hair every night and smooth in a little oil

14. Eat healthy and take a multi vitamin

15. Use wide tooth combs to reduce wear and tear.
